Following Christ & Becoming a Christian


There are several foundational truths we must begin to understand and claim when we become Christ-followers.

God loves you.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

Everyone is born a sinner. We are separated from God and His love because of sin.
Romans 3:23 reveals that "... all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God ...".

You can't save yourself.
People often think that through their efforts they can overcome the sin barrier between themselves and God. That isn't true. There's nothing you can do to restore the broken relationship with God. You can't earn God's salvation. (Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; Romans 4:4-5)

God sent His son Jesus to remove the sin barrier.
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23)

You may claim God's love and forgiveness by repentance and faith.
"But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name." (John 1:12)

God is ready to welcome you.
Romans 10:9 says, "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

You can take the first step right now.
Open your heart to God and receive Him. He's ready to receive you. You can pray the following prayer or use your own words.

"Lord Jesus, I believe You are truly the Son of God. I confess that I have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed. I believe You died and rose from the grave to purchase a place in Heaven for me. Jesus, come into my life, take control of my life, forgive my sins and save me. I trust myself to You. Amen."




How to Become a Member

1.   Profess your faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

2.   Affirm that profession in one of the following ways:
  • Baptism - being baptized by immersion,
  • Letter of Transfer - transferring your church membership from another Southern Baptist church to GBC, or
  • Statement of Faith - affirming that you are a Christian and that you were baptized by immersion in another church of like beliefs and practices.
